| Tips for models
We do not profess to be experts or have all the answers but have some tips which we recommend all models should follow. If you wish to add more, please let us know or if you think we have got it wrong, let us know also. Some of these may seem very obvious, and are common sense, but may be of help to models just starting out. These are not alarmist or scare mongering; any reputable photographer should give you the same advice! Check out enquiries thoroughlyThere are many highly reputable photographers. It is recommended you use them! If you are approached by an 'unknown' amateur photographer, that has not been recommended to you then we suggest you establish their full details, name, address and phone number (not just a mobile), and check it out and make sure you are aware of the purpose of the shoot requested. A reputable photographer should have no problem in providing these details. If you are under 18, you should ALWAYS be accompanied at a shoot. Insist on it! It is highly recommended that ALL models should go accompanied to a shoot with any photographer they have not worked with before. If you are going alone, make sure someone knows where you are going. We believe it is highly advisable that either you or the photographer should book a studio. Hotel rooms are not usually recommended for a first shoot. Expectations Make sure you establish the exact nature of the work required by the photographer and that he or she is fully aware of the work you are prepared to do. Do not allow a photographer to try to persuade you to do work you are uncomfortable with once you are at a shoot.Laws Ensure the work and content you wish to do is legal at your age in your Country.Do leave with a signed model release form (see below). Although it may be hard to take subsequent legal action for breaches, even if you have one, it will be nigh on impossible if you do not! Don't be lured by money Agree hours and fee plus any other arrangement (travel costs, accommodation etc.) in advance, preferably in writing (email). If you are using email accounts where you do not store your emails on your own computer, remember to print this out for future reference.Beware of photographers offering unusually high fees or incentives. There are likely to be string attached. Model Release In simple terms a model release sets out the purposes for which the photographer may use the pictures he or she takes. We do have a sample model release form if you would like a copy.Last but not least! This may seem like stating the obvious but remember - once a picture is taken or appears on the web, it can be copied, circulated, posted etc. and cannot therefore just be deleted!Do not be persuaded by ANYONE to do 'a few naughty shots' against you own wishes; they can always come back and haunt you. We know of models who have done this and been emotionally blackmailed for ever after. |
